Nobody fails at brushing because they don't care.

Most home dental routines fail for the same reason: they begin by asking the cat to tolerate something she hates.

Cat owner after another difficult tooth-brushing attempt
01

Months of trying

You bought the brush. You bought the paste. You tried the finger brush. She still wins every round.

02

Treats that vanish

A dental treat only does anything as a chew if she chews it. Plenty of cats simply swallow.

03

Everything else

Additives she refuses to drink. Wipes she squirms away from. Gels that turn into another wrestling match.

From public cat-owner discussions and third-party retail reviews. Not OvaPet customer testimonials.

Cats are very good at looking fine.

Discomfort in the mouth is not always visible from across the room. That is the honest reason to think about home care before anything is obviously wrong, rather than after.

Routine veterinary mouth check for a calm, healthy-looking cat
$300 to $700reported range for a routine feline dental cleaning in the U.S.

Cases involving extractions are reported higher again. Prices vary a great deal by clinic, region and what the exam finds.

Figures from CareCredit and GoodRx U.S. cost references. OvaPet is a supervised home-care addition, not a substitute for diagnosis or professional cleaning, and nothing here suggests a chew stick prevents dental disease or replaces a visit. The point is simply that a small routine you can repeat at home is worth having.

Almost every home routine starts on your side.

The issue is not effort. It is where the routine starts.

THE FORCED-CARE LOOP

Starts with your action, so the whole routine depends on cooperation.

1You act2She has to cooperate3She resists4The routine collapses
THE CHOICE-DRIVEN LOOP

Starts with curiosity, which makes the routine much easier to repeat.

1She notices it2She investigates3She chews4You can repeat it

Where most home routines usually break

  • BrushingOpen her mouth and hold it there.
  • Wipes and gelsHold her still and get your fingers past her teeth.
  • Water additiveHope she accepts a change in the taste of her water.
  • Dental treatHope she chews it instead of swallowing it whole.

What if the routine started with something she wanted to investigate?

Let curiosity start the routine.

Silvervine can give responsive cats a reason to investigate on their own. That changes who starts the session.

Cat voluntarily interacting with a silvervine chew stick
1

Sniff

The scent does the asking. In responsive cats it triggers curiosity with no handling at all.

2

Interact

She rubs her cheek on it, licks it, bats it across the floor, then starts to bite.

3

Chew

If she chooses to gnaw it, the fibrous wood and raffia make physical contact with tooth surfaces while she works on it.

4

Come back

A behaviour she chose is far easier to repeat than one you have to enforce twice a week.

What to watch for

Silvervine responsiveness and chewing are different. The useful signal is visible behaviour: sniffing, rubbing, biting and, for cats that choose to, chewing.

A treat only works as a chew if she actually chews it.

This is a difference of format and behaviour, not a claim about clinical outcomes.

Supervised use, always

Supervised use, always

Stay in the room, pick up loose fibres afterwards, and retire a stick once it is chewed down to a short stub.

Four minutes. Then you know what to watch for.

Keep the first session simple. The goal is to let curiosity happen on her terms.

Cat calmly investigating a silvervine chew stick during introduction
1

Scratch the bark

Lightly scrape the outer surface to release more scent. This is the step most people skip.

2

Put it down and step back

Do not push it into her face. Curiosity that starts on her terms lasts longer.

3

Watch the whole session

Sniffing, rubbing and play often come before chewing. Stay in the room the entire time.

4

Remove when damaged

Pick up loose fibres. Replace the stick once it is cracked, heavily frayed or small enough to swallow.

30-DAY CHEW TEST

Some cats chew. Some play. Some ignore it.

Silvervine response varies. Follow the four introduction steps and give your cat several separate sessions. If she still will not engage, contact us within 30 days of delivery and we will arrange the return or refund under the OvaPet chew test.

1Introduce it correctly.
2Watch her response.
3Keep it or use the chew test.

What we will and will not claim.

You have been sold a miracle pet product before. Here is the line, drawn by us, before you spend anything.

What it can do

  • +Give responsive cats a voluntary chew and play target
  • +Create physical contact with tooth surfaces while she chews
  • +Make a home oral-care routine easy enough to actually repeat
  • +Give a cat who already likes chewing a more appropriate target

What it does not do

  • ×Treat periodontal disease, gingivitis or tooth resorption
  • ×Replace brushing, a dental diet or professional veterinary dentistry
  • ×Guarantee plaque or tartar removal. No controlled feline trial supports that
  • ×Stay risk-free if chewed without supervision. It frays, and pieces must be removed

We would rather tell you exactly what this is than sell you a miracle it isn't.

Cat focused on chewing the silvervine stick at home

Better this than your charger.

Cables. Chargers. The corner of the sofa. Plastic bags at two in the morning. A cat who already likes to chew is going to chew something.

Giving her an appropriate supervised target is worth doing on its own. It will not guarantee she stops going after your cables, and cord covers still do most of that work, but it gives her somewhere better to put the habit.

She's obsessed

I thought this would be just another toy my cat would ignore, but she's OBSESSED. It keeps her so entertained that she finally leaves my cables alone.

Not a gimmick after all

Honestly, I thought it was just another Facebook gimmick. A friend gave me one from her pack and my cat loved it. I bought a pack a week later and they're amazing.

They last longer than I expected

I was worried my cat would go through them too quickly, but each stick keeps him busy for multiple play sessions.

Straight answers.

What if my cat completely ignores it?

Work through the four introduction steps first: scratch the bark, offer it at a different time of day, and try again across a few separate sessions. If she still will not engage, contact us within 30 days of delivery and we will arrange the return or refund under the 30-day chew test.

Is this proven to clean teeth?

No, and we will not say it is. Mechanical contact is a real principle in plaque control, and a cat gnawing fibrous wood does bring that wood against her teeth. But there is no controlled feline clinical trial showing a silvervine stick measurably reduces plaque, tartar or gingivitis. What we offer is a routine she may actually take part in, not a clinical outcome.

Can the stick splinter or become a choking hazard?

It is natural material, so it frays and small pieces can come away. That is why every session is supervised. Stay in the room, pick up loose fibres afterwards, and retire the stick once it is chewed down to a short stub or small enough to swallow. A cat who gulps rather than gnaws is not a good candidate for any chew product. If she swallows a sizeable piece, call your veterinarian.

Is silvervine a drug? Can my cat become addicted?

No. It is a plant response, closely related to how cats react to catnip and driven by naturally occurring iridoid compounds. A 2023 continued-exposure study reported no hallmarks of addiction and no concerning stress, liver or kidney markers under the conditions studied. That says nothing about the physical hazards of chewing, which is why supervision still applies.

Can kittens and senior cats use it?

For kittens, ask your veterinarian first because young cats are still developing their teeth and jaw and may be more likely to gulp pieces rather than gnaw them. Senior cats can enjoy a chew too, but they are also more likely to have undiagnosed dental problems, so have the mouth checked first and supervise every session closely.

What if my cat already has dental problems?

If your cat has oral pain, bleeding gums, loose teeth, diagnosed dental disease or trouble eating, speak to your veterinarian before use. A chew stick is not a treatment and should not delay diagnosis or professional dental care.

Which pack should I order, and how long do they last?

Each stick typically lasts up to one week, depending on how much your cat chews.

  • 3 sticks is the test, about three weeks, enough to see whether your cat takes to it.
  • 10 sticks is our most popular: roughly ten weeks for one cat.
  • 20 sticks covers two cats, or about five months for one.
